The Festive Spirit

It’s finally December and you know what that means - it’s finally time to get into the festive spirit! My favourite holiday of the year is a short 22 days away and I for one cannot wait. In honour of that, today’s article is a short & sweet one going through my top 5 ways of getting into the festive spirit. With the wind down to Christmas break for students of all levels, the excitement grows (as does the burn out - but that’s not for today). So, without further ado, these are my top 5 ways to get right into the festive spirit this December.

Time for Mariah to defrost…

What is the festive season without some festive tunes? Whilst Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you get your music, like to make their Christmas playlists, I like to make my own one of all the best (in my opinion) Christmas songs that will instantly lift your mood this December. Spend some time collating your favourite Christmas songs to sing along to at any and all times. Whether that’s Justin Bieber’s Drummer Boy or more classic tunes like It’s Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas (Michael Bublé, the Christmas music king), there’s plenty to last you the wholeeee month.

Watching Home Alone for the 10th time?

You certainly won’t be the only one. Now is definitely the time to break out the Christmas movies and make a list of the movies you want to watch before Christmas Day! My favourites include classics like Elf, the Home Alone movies, the Die Hard series (are they actually Christmas movies?) and more recent additions like Arthur Christmas (2011, so actually not that recent, ouch) and the revolving door of Netflix Christmas movies.

Christmas Decorations

Whether you stick to the basics of having a Christmas tree, or go all out and deck your house, car, and anywhere else with decorations, Christmas decorating is definitely a sure-fast way to get into the spirit. It’s also fun to go around and find the most outrageously decorated neighbourhood and have a look at their decorations too! Christmas decorating has personally always been a big event, in and of itself, during the festive season for me and will always be one to look forward to!

The Return of my Mince Pie Addiction

Christmas food is just about some of the best you’ll ever have. Whether you go with a Christmas turkey and all its decorations or choose to have seafood on Christmas, there’s no shortage of amazing food to be had during festive season. Mince pies and every other Christmas baked addiction you can think of (Christmas cookies, pudding, etc.) are all amazing, but one can’t forget to mention advent calendars. I’ve always had a chocolate one but aspire to one day get my hands on a Percy Pig one, just to see what they’re all about!

A Night at the Markets

Whilst you 100% can go to Christmas markets during the day and they’re absolutely wonderful, there’s something about Christmas markets at night when they’re all lit up and everyone is wrapped up and clinging to their drinks for warmth. Make an effort to get out in your uni town and go find Christmas markets before you go home for the holiday, I’ve made it a tradition the last 2 years and certainly haven’t been disappointed by the food on offer. There’s something about the Christmas market vibe that you just can’t get anywhere else - so don’t miss out!

Well, I did say it would be short & sweet! Hopefully you’ve taken some inspiration from this week’s article to help you get into the festive spirit and are looking forward to celebrating this holiday season, or just taking advantage of the time off! The festivities continue next week with even more Christmas content so make sure to keep an eye out for that! Happy holiday season and, as always, keep refining!
